TRUTH IN LABELLING
The appalling fiasco where dozens of people were made sick by eating Nana's berries infected with Hepatitis A, grown and packaged in China - YET LABELLED AS 'PRODUCT OF NEW ZEALAND' - has highlighted the disgraceful state of food labelling in Australia.
Most consumers want to know where their food is grown, and where it is manufactured, but according to a recent CHOICE survey are confused about current labelling requirements - In a survey of 700 members CHOICE found only 12% were able to accurately identify the meaning of "Made in Australia".
Yet this is just the tip of the iceberg in relation to adequate product labelling, with issues such as GMO (genetically modified organisms) content, misleading use of the words 'natural' and 'organic', simple explanation of food additives, etc. gaining increasing support in the community.
We call for clear and distinctive labelling of any product that has GMOs, and we want to see the removal of food additives that are not genuine 'foods' and were not meant to be consumed.
